Another planning application on the Terry’s site

Friends of Nun Ings (FONI, https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100089615226917) are encouraging local people to look at the latest planning application at the former Terry’s factory. The application is to develop the former car park, which is on the left hand side as you go out of town on Bishopthorpe Road, opposite the main Terry’s entrance.

FONI will be sending an Objection and they add that it would be helpful if individuals could write in their own words objections to this development if you wish (details for how to submit are at the bottom of this post).

The deadline for responses is 23 May 2023.

FONI’s concerns are:

* The scale, height and massing of the new application is little changed from an earlier refused previous application. It now has 72 flats as opposed to 70 flats in the original rejected application.

*The application is an example of over development of this site sitting next to open countryside and strategically important heritage assets.

* It is still 4 storeys as previously applied for.

* The Draft Local Plan states no development should be higher than the two tier car park that was originally proposed.

* The development will harm the setting of key views from the River of significant Listed Heritage Assets in a conservation area. (Terry’s factory building.)

* Nun Ings is a historically and environmentally important part of York’s green wedges.

* The historic setting of York is protected under national planning guidance. (1 of only 5 cities in England to be protected.)

* The scale, height and massing will impact on the green belt and push urban sprawl into the green belt.

* The fact that Nun Ings is such an important piece of green belt that is so much loved and well used by local residents.

* This development is not in keeping with this sensitive site.

* Residents did not have an opportunity to put their objections forward as the previous application did not go to planning and COYC Planning did not put these concerns in their evidence to the public inquiry.

To find details of the application, and to post your comments, type the planning application number 23/00608/FULM into the council’s planning application search. Deadline 23 May 2023.

Street-re-Cycle, Sunday 14 May

Our next ever-popular Street-re-Cycle takes place 11am to 3pm on Sunday 14 May.

Sort out your stuff – books, clothes, DVDs, shoes, toys, games, small pieces of furniture…

Display your items outside your house… on the Sunday, there’ll be front yards and gardens full of surprises!

We’ll publish a list of all the households taking part.

And as people arrive to see what you’re offering, you simply sell it – swap it – give it away.

It’s a great way to meet your neighbours and pass on some items in a fun and friendly way. And passing things on in this way means there’s less need for new stuff to be made in the world.

To sign up: contact Pie Waller on 07761 642160 by 6pm, Wednesday 10 May. Be sure to include in your text your name, address and postcode – thank you.

Happy clutter-clearing!

Join in the Climate Café this Wednesday evening

We’re pleased to promote a climate café which we’ve heard is being organised at The Winning Post this Wednesday 26 April at 8pm.

What’s a Climate Café?

A climate café is an informal facilitated space where fears and uncertainties about our climate & ecological crisis can be safely expressed.

So it’s for people who really want to talk about how they’re feeling about the climate situation, especially if those conversations don’t happen with your friends or family or colleagues.

The focus is our thoughts and feelings about the climate and ecological crisis. There are no guest speakers and no presentations, and it is an advice-free zone – no-one will tell you what to do or what to believe.

The organisers have previously held a climate cafe at the Winning Post and some of us from Planet South Bank attended and found it really helpful. So that’s why we’re happy to promote their next café this week.

Free to attend. No need to register; just turn up in time for 8pm.

The Sharehouse Collective donations today, at Planet South Bank’s Spring Fair, 2-4pm

As a reminder: when you visit the community garden at St Clements Church this afternoon for our Spring Fair, you’ll also have the chance to donate to Micklegate’s food support scheme, The Collective Sharehouse.

Ideal food donations to The Collective Sharehouse: they are grateful for any tinned/packet non-perishable foods. They would especially welcome tinned meats – especially ham or corned beef, UHT whole milk, cooking oil, coffee, microwaveable packets & pots, laundry detergents, and household cleaning sprays & cloths.

Financial donations can also be made on Sunday, in cash or via a QR code at their stall.

The Collective Sharehouse is a local ‘give as you can, take as you need’ community food support offering help to residents in financial hardship within the Micklegate area of York. During three sessions every week, based at Clements Hall, they offer non-perishable foods along with personal and household hygiene products to anyone from the Micklegate area who’s finding they need a bit of extra support in these challenging times.

Give yourself a treat this Saturday evening

With thanks to St Clements Church for hosting us, this Saturday Planet South Bank is screening “The Ants and the Grasshopper” – an award-winning documentary about farming, inequality, climate change and more.

St Clements Church, this Saturday 15 April, 7pm to 9pm

Here’s the film trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIiv7oPrZoc

“If you want someone to change, you go to their doorstep with your problem.”

Follow local Malawian farmer and activist Anita Chitaya as she travels from her village in Malawi to California to the White House. Her journey takes her across the rural-urban divide, schisms of race, class and gender, and the unfair impacts of climate change; and she challenges the thinking that allows us to believe we live on a different planet from everyone else.

Hot drinks and chat afterwards. Film length: 75 minutes.

Free entry. Please register via this Eventbrite page so we know how many to expect. Thank you!, and we look forward to seeing you.

Cash donations welcome on the night to the community organisation “Soil, Food and Healthy Communities in Malawi”, which is mentioned in the film.
