Street-re-Cycle

We’ll be organising our next Street-re-Cycle in the spring of 2026. We’ll post the date here once we’ve made our plans, but please contact us in the meantime info@planetsouthbank.org.uk for more information or updates.

All about Street-re-Cycle

It’s a great chance to declutter – books, clothing, small bits of furniture, children’s toys and bric-a-brac; and a chance to re-purpose things that might otherwise go to landfill – tiles, paint, fabrics etc.

You get a chance to meet new people in your community; and overall it means there’s less need for people to buy new stuff.

On the day, local people journey round the trail, looking for things they might want for their own household. Items can be swapped, sold or given away. Householders need to tidy up after themselves when the event is finished at 3pm.

Would your local group like to set up its own Street-re-Cycle? We often get enquiries about what’s needed to set one up – it’s very simple.

To set up your own Street-re-Cycle, you will need:

  • A small group of people to help with the organising and decision-making
  • A way of promoting the event to your local community, and a way of receiving household sign-ups (we use our e-mail address for that).

Street-re-Cycle in a nutshell: on an agreed date, there’s a trail of households who have signed up to put stuff outside their front door – things they no longer need, such as books, clothing, small bits of furniture, children’s toys and bric-a-brac.

On the day, local people journey round the trail, looking for things they might want for their own household. Items can be swapped, sold or given away. Householders need to tidy up after themselves when the event is finished at 3pm.

The benefits of a Street-re-Cycle:

– householders get to have a clear-out;

– odds and ends can be repurposed (tins of paint, fabrics, tiles etc) which might otherwise go to landfill;

– people get to meet their local neighbours;

– there’s less need for everyone to buy new stuff.

Some pointers for success:

  • Try and get many households signed-up as possible – the busier the trail, the more people start joining in on the day
  • When someone signs up, encourage them to get other households in their street to do the same: several addresses on the same street means more people are likely to visit.
  • Creating posters and flyers, and posting on social media platforms, helps build interest and momentum.
  • In your promotional messages, set the boundaries for the area in which households can register – if they’re too far apart, they may be disappointed as to how many visitors they get.
  • Set a deadline for sign-ups, so that you have time to get all the addresses ready to publish (we list them in a blog post and on facebook, and put printed copies in our local supermarket).
  • Ask for postcodes, not just the house number and street: this helps visitors find the right address.
  • Remind householders to tidy up after themselves, and – if they can – to sit outside with their stuff, as that helps create conversations and you can encourage people to take things away!
