Scores of community owned energy companies have been set up across the UK in recent years, everywhere from Cornwall via rural Oxfordshire and suburban Manchester to the Scottish islands. Our aim is to establish such a company in York.
Onshore wind has the highest potential for generation in York, but since the recent planning policy changes by Government this is not a viable prospect in the foreseeable future. So we are now looking to partner with local organisations to install solar panels on suitable roofs across the City of York area.
Our aim is to establish a company which would be owned, supported and controlled by community shareholders. This company would raise investment, obtain all necessary planning permissions, and commission the solar installations. A substantial portion of the profit would then be distributed for community projects, with the remainder paid to the investors.
