Planet South Bank’s response to the Council’s draft Climate Change Strategy

We really enjoyed the stall we held on Bishy Road a few weeks ago, encouraging folk to take part in the Council’s draft Strategy.

It was great to meet people – to discuss their priorities for the city, and to tap into their interest and energy for meaningful climate change responses in York.

As Planet South Bank, we submitted our thoughts on the draft Strategy. If you’d like to read it, you can view or download below. And this is our page of resources on the draft Climate Change Strategy.

Bishy Road stalls this weekend

Do come and say hello if you see us on the corner by Bishy Road shops this weekend.

You may be aware that City of York Council has begun a consultaton on its draft Cimate Change Strategy.

At Planet South Bank, we’re really keen to encourage local people to look at the draft Strategy, and to take part in the consultation on this really important issue.

So we’ve written a summary, availabile here https://planetsouthbank.org.uk/yorks-2022-draft-climate-change-strategy/, and which we hope will help make the full Strategy more accessible.

And come and have a chat with us tomorrow or Sunday!

This page on our website has all the links and documents: https://planetsouthbank.org.uk/yorks-2022-draft-climate-change-strategy/

Community Gardening dates for the rest of 2022

Since 2011, Planet South Bank Planet has worked with St Clements Church to transform land at the church on Scarcroft Road into a growing psace for fruit, veg, herbs, edible flowers and beautiful pollinators.

So if you want to join in growing delicious fruit and veg, we’re a group of local people growing food together, and sharing the produce amongst ourselves, other locals and occasionally the Planet Food project at Southlands Church.

Our sessions are on Sundays at 2pm, lasting at least an hour, but sometimes longer if we are particularly enjoying ourselves. We provide all the equipment and occasionally snacks!

June 19 – general garden care

July 3, 17, 31 – weeding and harvesting

August 14 – soft fruit harvesting

August 28 – digging potatoes

September 11 & 25 – squash harvesting & composting

October 9 & 23 – garden tidying for the winter

This community garden is for everyone who is interested in growing (and eating) beautiful edible plants, especially all local people who don’t have access to growing space or who want to learn growing and gardening skills.

For more information see the Community Garden page.

Have you signed up yet? – Street-re-Cycle, Sunday 15 May

Our ever-popular opportunity for a clear-out and to meet your local community. 11.00am to 3.00pm, Sunday 15 May.

Sell it, swap it, give it away…

Here’s how it works: First, sign up by contacting Pie Waller on 07761 642160 by Wednesday 11 May to make sure your address is on the list of households taking part. Be sure to include your name, address and postcode – thank you.

Then, look out things ready to pass on. Why not get ahead this weekend, by beginning to clear cupboards and sort shelves?

The day before the event, we’ll publish here on the planetsouthbank website and on our facebook page a list of South Bank households taking part.

On the day, put out your stuff at the front of your house. Please take care not to block pavements or access ways, and tidy up anything not taken by the end of the event.

And, don’t forget to find time to wander round to see what neighbours on the streets nearby are offering!

Take this chance to meet your neighbours, clear out your cupboards and sheds, get some great stuff for yourself, and have some good green fun.

Stop the plastic crisis!

Planet South Bank is supporting The Big Plastic Count, to help push the government, brands and supermarkets to take bold action and reduce the amount of plastic in our lives.

It’s easy to take part: visit https://thebigplasticcount.com/ and sign up.

When you do so, you’ll join over 100,000 other people who have already committed to taking part.

Then, count the plastic in your purchases during the week 16-22 May.

When you submit your results, you’ll get a personal plastic footprint and information about what really happens to plastic when it leaves your home. Once all the results are in, The Big Plastic Count will share the national picture, and the next steps on pushing the government into action.

No-one knows – nobody’s counting – how much plastic we’re really having to throw away, and it’s probably more than anyone realises. Help create a truer picture, in order to build a movement for change.

Do you know a school which might be interested in taking part? Ther’s a teacher’s pack and free resources, including classroom-based activities and a PowerPoint lesson for 9-12 years https://thebigplasticcount.com/schools.
