Bed-making

Here in the photos below you can see the story of making the raised bed at The Nose on Sunday – from piles of timber, to layering the bottom of bed with compost.

If you have any mature compost or spare soil, please be in touch; it’s going to take us a while to fill the bed up to the top!

A huge thanks especially to handyman Chan, who brought his expertise, leadership and good humour! to the work. Thanks too to Ross, Leah, Kate, Fiona, Bronwen and John.

In making this raised bed, we hope to make community gardening at The Nose even more accessible and welcoming, especially for folk with restricted mobility. Why not come down and give it a try?, no matter how mobile you are!

And if you have ideas about what you’d like to see growing in the raised bed, just let us know.

We hold fortnightly drop-in gardening and harvesting sessions on Sunday afternoons. Gardeners of all ages are welcome.

Raised bed

From 11 am this Saturday – 23 July – a team of us will be erecting an amazing raised bed in our lovely community garden. We need your help!

The bed will be in a U-shape and about 60 cm high (much more fancy than the one in this photo), making it accessible for people with mobility issues and those who prefer not to bend down too much.

We will be led by Chan, who is our lovely volunteer joiner, who has got all the wood ready to install on Saturday. The more people who turn up, the quicker the job…..see you there! No tools required, just a bit of enthusiasm and patience 🙂

Open Garden event

Along with other Edible / Community Gardens in York, we opened our community garden,  The Nose, to the public on Saturday 16 July.

The Nose is the triangular patch of land next to St Clements Church, Nunthorpe Road. We were delighted to welcome a number of visitors of a wide range of ages, from about 2 to 70.

We enjoyed scones with homemade jam in the welcome shade of some shrubs in the garden. The jam was made from fruit picked in the garden earlier in the week.

Our lovely volunteer joiner was also on site preparing wood for our fantastic raised bed which will be erected next Saturday (23 July, from 11 am). Join us if you can!
