Gardening through the drizzle

The Nose was one of the participants in Edible York’s Open Gardens event on Saturday, and the Yorkshire weather was certainly not co-operating. In the intermittent drizzle, a grand total of 5 people called by, including a baby (hello, Abigail!), over the 3 hours. Although it was lovely to see those who did make it, let’s hope for better weather next time!

I suppose it is sort-of becoming autumn, but the community gardening will continue until it becomes too wintry to be pleasant … and the next massed gardening session will be next Sunday 14th September, from 2pm. Come and join us, to find out what’s in season (still lots and lots of rocket), and what our plans are for the next year.

Look out for our stall tomorrow, Bishy road car park

As part of the street party tomorrow, Planet South Bank will have a stall in the Bishy Road car park. Look out for children’s lucky dip, lavender bags (locally grown organic lavender!), and bespoke Bishy Road pots and bookmarks.

And as York and Yorkshire go Tour-crazy, City of York Council has put up along the city walls about 60 banners made by York community groups and organisations.

Here’s the one made by Planet South Bank – we’re up near the railway station.

Banner-making for the Tour de France: like to come and lend a hand?

You may have heard of the plan to create banners to decorate the City walls for the Tour de France – Dress to Impress.

The banners are being made by local community groups, clubs and  organisations; and Planet South Bank has signed up to make its own banner.

We wondered if any Planet South Bank supporters would like to help design and paint the banner? We’ll be doing the making this Saturday 31 May, 4-7pm, at a venue near the Bishopthorpe Road shops.

No artistic expertise required, just enthusiasm! All materials provided.

If you’d like to be involved, please e-mail us and we’ll be back in touch to confirm the arrangements.

Summertime gardening

The community garden at St Clements Church, known as the The Nose for its triangular shape, was assessed yesterday for renewal of the Green Flag award – fingers crossed!

Everyone is welcome to discover the joys of fruit and vegetable planting and harvesting at The Nose. We run regular sessions two Sunday afternoons every month – e-mail thenose@planetsouthbank.org.uk for more information.

In the meantime, here’s a montage (with thanks to Belinda Gillett) of photos of The Nose earlier this week, as South Bank nears the end of Spring and enters the start of Summer this year.

J’adore Bishy Rue: Street Party details – and seeking volunteer stewards

Planet South Bank has received the following message from Graham Meiklejohn – e-mail graham@meiklejohncommunications.co.uk if you’d like to be a Steward on the day.
“The Bishopthorpe Street Traders Association are getting ready  preparation of the next Bishy Road Street Party.
This will be held on Sunday 6 July.  The street party will commence immediately after the Tour de France Grand Depart has passed Bishopthorpe Road around midday.  The party will continue until 1900.
We are currently seeking Stewards for the event.  We would prefer people who would be available for the duration of the event but are open to all offers of support.
As the city will be the focus of global attention for the Grand Depart, all Stewards for the Street Party will receive a day of training provided by the City of York Council.  This will be along the lines of the training provided for the Games Makers at the Olympic Games.  We welcome the support the Council has made to facilitating this training.  This will be to a certified level which will be recognised by other event organisers.
If you would you like to volunteer for this role please reply to this e-mail and we will be in contact shortly with further details.  If you have any queries please let me know and I will be pleased to respond to then.
We hope you will be able to join us for another great community day on Bishopthorpe Road.
Kind regards,
Graham graham@meiklejohncommunications.co.uk “
