Kids sowing for the Nose
Peas and beans sown in pots at the Good Friday workshops
The Brownie pack from Southlands planted peas and beans in pots at a session before Easter, and then brought the resulting seedlings to plant up at the Nose, at a second session. At the St Clement’s Church’s Good Friday workshops, Planet South Bank ran another seed-sowing workshop, with about 40 children leaving their decorated plant pots in the pews, as they continued to enjoy the other activities on offer. The seedlings that result from this activity can be planted up outside, once the weather cheers up, and Planet South Bank will also be helping the Sunday school sow some salad crops.

The 3rd annual Scarecrow Festival is on its way!
We have had such fun the last two years, we decided to do it all over again! This year, we’re going to get the scarecrows in place the weekend before the Olympic flame goes through York, and so there is an additional challenge – can we make scarecrows with a sporting flavour? Any one in the South Bank area is welcome to join in – we had 50 last year, and it would be great to have more. More details are available on the leaflet.

gardening starts again
A few vegetables over-wintered (parsley, rocket, spinach and cavalo nero) and the purple sprouting brocoli is just getting going, but a new sowing and planting season has started at the Nose community garden. All are welcome to our sessions – normally first and third Saturday mornings of the month – although also 5th of April, for Easter holidays!
Forthcoming sessions. 5th April, 7th April, 21st April, 5th May and 19th May.

South Bank glows in the Dark
This week, Planet South Bank have been working with our friends from York in Transition on a thermal imaging project, taking thermal images of our houses (and children and guinea pigs), to see where the heat is being lost. We chose the coldest possible time to do it in – which wasn’t strictly necessary, but will give some images, we hope. The York in Transition team will process the images over the next few weeks, and then we’ll call a meeting where all the South Bank householders can pick up their images, and talk over some ideas for improving their snug-ness ratings! Watch this space for time and venue. Many thanks to Peter, Edward and Andreas for making this project happen.

Introducing Planet South Bank
What is Planet South Bank? Planet South Bank aims to help local residents to learn more about climate change, reduce their carbon footprints, lead greener lives – and have fun doing it!
South Bank includes Clementhorpe, Bishopthorpe Road, Nunnery Lane and the roads off Scarcroft and up to the Knavesmire.
We grew out of the York Green Neighbourhood Challenge (January to June 2010), and we are planning regular events, stalls and activities throughout 2011 and beyond.
Meetings (inevitably). More information on these nearer the time.
Gardening. From now until the end of the main growing season (early November probably), we’ll be there on a more regular basis – see our Gardening page for details.
It’s been great to see the garden being so fruitful. Planet South Bank members have already been handing out veggies to local people and others are starting to come down and see what’s going on and take some produce home – which is what it’s all about. There are pictures of the garden’s progress on our Facebook page – just search on Planet South Bank and you’ll find us. It’s also a good way to keep abreast of what’s going on, especially if we put up additional gardening sessions at short notice.
